Meet records tumble at 2026 Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet

The 2026 Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet continued on Saturday, May 23, with the second session of the day producing a busy programme of breaststroke, freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and relay events. The three-day meet, which opened on Friday evening and was scheduled to continue on Sunday morning, featured swimmers from Tornadoes, Y Speedos, Vikings, Sailfish, Sharks, Wahoo, Swimmers Aquatic, Makos, Blue Seals, Blue Marlins and other clubs.

In the 11-12 girls’ 100-metre breaststroke, Cass Thomas won the opening heat for Tornadoes, Nia Donaldson of Y Speedos took the second heat in a personal best, and Jordana Thomas of Y Speedos won the final heat in 1:27.49. Among the boys in the same age group, Miguel Jonas of Tornadoes led home Aiden Dennis and Noah Spence in the fastest heat.

The 13-and-over breaststroke races brought wins for Alexis Miller, Leah Blair, Muna Lee Bryan, Addison Thomas and Olympian Sabrina Lynn in the girls’ heats. In the boys’ 13-and-over 100-metre breaststroke, Tyler Robinson of Tornadoes was dominant in the final heat, finishing ahead of Brandon Wong and Arai French.

The masters swimmers also drew attention. Lisa Griffith of Tornadoes lowered her own women’s 25-and-over 50-metre breaststroke meet record from 48.85 to 47.38, then later broke her 50-metre freestyle mark with 36.13. Anthony Morrison Vincent won the men’s 25-and-over 50-metre freestyle in 28.45, just outside his 2024 record.

Distance freestyle produced one of the session’s closest finishes. Dominic Whitlock of Y Speedos won the boys’ 9-10 400-metre freestyle in 5:36.70, edging teammate Kell Walters by six-hundredths of a second. William Juan of Sharks later set an unofficial boys’ 11-12 200-metre freestyle meet record of 2:12.95.

More records followed in the sprint butterfly. Danilia Powell of Y Speedos won the girls’ 11-12 50-metre butterfly in an unofficial meet record of 30.52. Sabrina Lynn took the girls’ 13-and-over 50-metre butterfly in 28.18, while Skyler Richards was also credited with lowering the 15-17 mark.

Backstroke and relays closed the evening. Dominic Whitlock set a new boys’ 9-10 100-metre backstroke meet record of 1:25.02, while Tornadoes and Speedos battled through the closing freestyle relays, with Tornadoes taking the boys’ 15-24 relay in 1:45.19 ahead of Speedos in 1:45.92.
