2 min readSt. James

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — One of the most memorable moments of Day 1 of the 11th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference came from an unlikely source: a talented 10-year-old from St. James with an extraordinary gift and dreams of superstardom.

Tahj’Dre Brydson captivated attendees during the Governor-General’s Achievement Awards presentation, delivering a beautiful rendition of Jimmy Cliff’s Many Rivers to Cross that earned him an extended standing ovation from the audience at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.

The young entertainer is already a multiple Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) award winner and is steadily building an impressive résumé of performances across the island.

Following the performance, Tahj’Dre was joined by his parents, Truddymay and Delvan Brydson, who reflected on the journey that brought their son to one of the conference’s biggest stages.

According to his mother, Tahj’Dre’s musical gifts became evident when he was just two years old.

“His talent was discovered at an early age of two when we realized his abilities,” she explained. “We are in the church, so we would go on YouTube, use soundtracks and develop his abilities from there.”

His father, Delvan, described the moment as a proud milestone for the family.

“I’m a proud father to know that we nurtured our child and he’s starting to come to fruition,” he said. “Here we are, superstar at such a young age.”

Despite the enthusiastic response from the audience, Tahj’Dre admitted he experienced some nerves before taking the stage.

“I felt confident, but I was a little nervous because I’ve never sung in front of so many people,” he said. “It’s like a dream come true.”

The young performer currently attends Greater Destiny Preparatory and Kindergarten School and is already thinking beyond Jamaica’s shores.

Asked where he hopes to see his singing career in the next five years, Tahj’Dre’s answer was immediate.

“I want to be a superstar. I want to perform in many different countries. I want to travel the world and let people know my talent.”

Based on the response he received at the Jamaica Diaspora Conference, and his success in JCDC competitions, he is already well on his way.

As delegates from across the globe gathered to discuss the future of Jamaica and its diaspora, Tahj’Dre’s performance served as a reminder that the island’s future is also being shaped by a new generation of talented young Jamaicans whose gifts are already inspiring audiences at home and abroad.

For many in attendance, the standing ovation was more than appreciation for a great performance—it was recognition of a young star whose journey is just beginning.
