South Korea edge Czech Republic 2-1 in World Cup opener

1 min read

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AFP) — South Korea began their World Cup campaign with three points on Thursday, defeating the Czech Republic 2-1 after turning sustained attacking pressure into a late victory.

For much of the match, it looked as if the Koreans might pay for failing to finish their opportunities. The breakthrough came near the 80-minute mark, when substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu delivered the winner inside a Guadalajara venue with many empty seats.

The side led by Son Heung-min controlled the opening half but could not score. Son, formerly of Tottenham, sent one attempt too high, then cut left on a powerful run, slipped away from two Czech defenders, and put his shot wide.

The second half quickly brought a twist, with the Czechs going ahead despite being under pressure. Ladislav Krejci met the ball at the near post and headed it beyond South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.

Hwang In-beom brought South Korea level in the 67th minute, shaping as if to shoot before lifting a composed finish over Czech goalkeeper Matek Kovar. The Czechs later had a goal ruled out.

Hwang then helped decide the contest, sending in a right-side cross for Oh to finish. After a hectic closing spell ended with the final whistle, Son dropped to the ground in celebration.

South Korea next meet co-hosts Mexico on June 18, after Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 earlier Thursday in the opening Group A match. The Czech Republic face South Africa in Atlanta that same day.
