Christopher Taylor wins men's 200m at JAAA/PUMA national championships

Christopher Taylor captured the men's open 200 metres crown on day four of the JAAA/PUMA National Junior and Senior Championships, edging Jaquone Powell in a fiercely contested final at the National Stadium.

Taylor crossed the line in 20.09 seconds, with Powell second in 20.14. Rasheed Clarke finished third in 20.28, followed by Tyquendo Tracey (20.36), Kadrian Goldson (20.43), Adrian Card (20.46), Jevaughn Thomas (20.49) and Jevaughn Williams (20.94).

The race had been billed as one of the meet's strongest fields, with several sprinters carrying sub-20.30 credentials into the final. Adrian Card, the fastest man on paper with a 20.08 personal best, lined up in lane eight for Dynamic Speed. Kadrian Goldson, seeking redemption after a disappointing 100m final, occupied lane seven. Taylor, a former national 400m champion, started in lane six with a lifetime best of 20.21 and a 20.49 season mark from qualifying run into a strong headwind.

Jaquone Powell, the 2022 national 400m champion and also a 20.21 lifetime best holder, entered in sharp form after a 20.39 first-round run. Rasheed Clarke, the world under-20 and Jamaican senior record holder in the 400m hurdles, chose the 200m here despite a 20.41 personal best over the distance. Jevaughn Williams, Jevaughn Thomas and the 33-year-old Tyquendo Tracey completed the lineup.

From the gun Taylor rose strongly and Powell matched him through the bend. The pair broke clear of the pack on the back straight, and Taylor inched ahead down the home stretch to land his first national 200m title. He had placed second behind Bryan Levell in the event last year.

Taylor's winning time would have marked a personal best, but the wind gauge returned a reading of positive 2.5 metres per second, above the two-metre limit for record purposes. Officials therefore could not ratify the performance as a legal best, though the national title stood. Commentators described the contest as one of the championship's standout races, with the two former 400m specialists outrunning the rest of the field.
