Seven diaspora Jamaicans honoured at Governor General's achievement awards 2026
Seven members of the Jamaican diaspora were recognised on 15 June 2026 at the Governor General's Diaspora Achievement Awards, held as part of the 11th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference under the theme of diaspora partnerships for a more climate-resilient Jamaica.
Governor General Sir Patrick Allen told the ceremony that the honours reflected national gratitude to overseas Jamaicans whose service, achievements and commitment carry the island's spirit into communities worldwide. The Governor General's Achievement Award programme, which began including diaspora recipients in 2008, has broadened beyond the United Kingdom, United States and Canada to recognise Jamaicans in Africa, Asia, mainland Europe, the Caribbean and South America. In 2024, six honourees from the US, UK and Canada were recognised; this year's seven awardees were nominated by Jamaican consulates, embassies and high commissions on community recommendations.
From Canada, Christina McFerson received the under-35 award for mentorship and immigrant empowerment, including through her podcast supporting newcomers. Lisa Rotty was honoured for diaspora engagement and humanitarian work, including mobilising more than CAD$700,000 in disaster relief and coordinating aid shipments to Jamaica.
Carl Samuels of the United Kingdom was recognised for preserving Caribbean heritage through the Heritage Centre Wolverhampton and for leading a Hurricane Melissa relief appeal that assisted more than 800 families in Jamaica. From the United States, Asha Richards was cited for migration advocacy and disaster response, while Dr Richard M. White was honoured for advancing education and access to social services.
Dr Nicolen Johnson, based in China, was recognised for strengthening trade, educational exchange and cultural cooperation between Jamaica and China after a journey that began in Bethel Town, Westmoreland. Dr Sandra Kidorand of France received recognition for diaspora mentorship and youth development, including through the Jamaica Diaspora Mentorship Academy and her role as vice chair of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council.
Speaking on behalf of the honourees, Dr White said the group accepted the awards as ambassadors of Jamaica, motivated by love of country rather than recognition. He urged diaspora members to serve with excellence, remain faithful to their roots and uphold the law in the countries where they live.
Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith, State Minister Alando Terrellong and conference chairman Earl Jarrett were among officials attending the presentation chaired by Mrs FA Ellington.
