Saharan Dust Blanket Prompts Health Ministry Warning Across Jamaica
Jamaica's Ministry of Health says Saharan dust is now affecting the island and is advising residents to limit how much they come into contact with the particles.
According to the ministry, heavy exposure may lead to serious health problems, including a higher chance of respiratory conditions and related illnesses such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), respiratory infections and allergies. The dust may also cause irritation to the skin and eyes, and can affect the quality of water.
The ministry says the public, especially people who already have respiratory illnesses or are more likely to develop them, should take extra precautions. It recommends remaining indoors where possible, using face masks, wearing long-sleeved clothing and shielding the eyes.
Residents are also being urged to wash their hands often, avoid touching their eyes, treat harvested water, and keep water for household use covered, including supplies used for drinking and preparing food.
