Switzerland Beat Colombia on Penalties to Face Argentina in World Cup Quarterfinal

1 min read

Switzerland have taken the final quarterfinal place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beating Colombia 4-3 from the penalty spot after a goalless Round of 16 match on Tuesday.

The tie at BC Place was built on disciplined defending, with neither side breaking the deadlock across 90 minutes. The teams combined for expected goals of just 0.7—the lowest total in regulation time at the tournament so far—reflecting how few clear scoring chances were created.

With the score still level after extra time, the outcome was decided on penalties. Colombia slipped when Davinson Sánchez and Juan Hernández both missed, while Switzerland's Manuel Akanji also failed to convert. The Swiss held steady nonetheless to secure a 4-3 shootout win.

That result sets up a quarterfinal meeting with Argentina, who earlier came from behind to defeat Egypt 3-2.

Lionel Messi struck again in another strong showing at the competition and now sits alone atop the Golden Boot standings as Argentina progressed.

Switzerland and Argentina are scheduled to meet in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11.

No World Cup fixtures are set for Wednesday. The quarterfinal stage opens on Thursday, with France facing Morocco.
