Three early Monday quakes strike Trinidad and Tobago, SRC reports no damage

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Three earthquakes shook Trinidad and Tobago within about an hour on Monday morning. Two of the tremors, measuring 5.2 and 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck at nearly the same moment.

The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St Augustine campus in Trinidad and Tobago said it had received no immediate accounts of structural harm or casualties linked to the shocks.

According to the SRC, the opening tremor came at 5:45 a.m. local time. It registered magnitude 5.1 at a depth of 59 kilometres and was felt 24 kilometres north-east of Scarborough in Tobago, 109 kilometres north-east of Arima, and 126 kilometres east of the capital, Port of Spain.

At 6:55 a.m., the centre recorded a magnitude 5.2 quake at a depth of 10 kilometres. That tremor was felt 67 kilometres north-west of Port of Spain, 84 kilometres north-west of Arima, and 96 kilometres south of St George’s in Grenada.

The SRC also logged a separate magnitude 5.0 earthquake at the same 6:55 a.m. timestamp, this one at a depth of 80 kilometres.

Residents described the shaking on social media. One person wrote, “It felt like something slammed into the house,” while another asked, “Is the area warming up for a bigger event, I mean considering the global patterns and all”.
