Jamaica women take first Commonwealth Games 3x3 basketball win over Cayman Islands

Jamaica’s women’s 3x3 basketball team recorded its first victory at the Commonwealth Games on Friday, defeating the Cayman Islands 21-5 in Pool C action in Glasgow, Scotland.

The result was Jamaica’s sole win in the pool. The squad had previously fallen 18-17 to Uganda and 21-13 to Australia.

In the pool, Jessica Calderbank missed out on the women’s 50-metre butterfly final after finishing sixth in her semi-final in 26.88 seconds. She had placed fifth in her heat in 27.17 seconds.

Keita Campbell likewise failed to reach the men’s 100-metre breaststroke final, finishing eighth in his semi-final in one minute 2.02 seconds after a fifth-place heat time of one minute 2.31 seconds.

In lawn bowls, Robert Simpson suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fiji’s Rajnesh Prasad in round two of Section C, his second loss in men’s singles.

Jamaica’s netball team, silver medallists at the previous Games, opens its campaign on Saturday against Trinidad and Tobago at 1:00 p.m. Jamaica time. Athletics, which delivered 13 of Jamaica’s 15 medals four years ago, begins on Monday.
