Chang orders tighter sex offender oversight after Trelawny child killing

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang has ordered a fresh look at how Jamaica deals with sex offenders, with his ministry set to examine and push forward measures for tighter control of people convicted of those crimes.

Speaking today, Dr Chang said firm steps will follow and that his officers have been told to keep driving that work. He spoke as he joined the countrywide outcry over the sexual assault and killing of 10-year-old Shani Coke at Toy in Trelawny on Tuesday.

The minister said the Constabulary has instructions to put every available asset into a speedy, complete inquiry carried out in the open. He stressed that the ministry is devoted to shielding Jamaica’s children and is backing the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) as it comforts the bereaved relatives and works to keep young people safe across the island.

Dr Chang also called on Jamaicans to stay firm on the demand for justice and responsibility, and on shaping neighbourhoods where children can live without harm or dread.
