Accountant General and Administrator General Departments Meet in Public Sector Debate Final
The Accountant General's Department and the Administrator General's Department will meet in the championship round of the Public Sector Debate Competition on Thursday, July 9, at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, with proceedings set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
The finalists will argue the motion that Jamaica should place greater emphasis on raising productivity in industries already operating on the island, instead of pursuing policies geared toward creating new higher value-added sectors.
Earlier on the same day, the Teaching Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will square off in a third-place play-off. Their debate will address whether the Government of Jamaica should create a legal right allowing all Jamaicans free public access to the foreshore and sea, subject only to reasonable limits tied to safety, environmental protection, and public order.
Thirty-two teams took part in this year's tournament. The victorious side will receive cash and prizes totalling more than $1 million.
Anneke Clarke, Communication Lead at the Transformation Implementation Unit (TIU), told JIS News that the finalists showed strong preparation and teamwork throughout the event, raising expectations for a compelling conclusion.
"Each round has showcased the remarkable talent that exists across the public service. The finalists have earned their place through disciplined research, collaboration and thoughtful debate, and we look forward to an engaging championship that reflects the quality of this year's competition," she said.
The TIU organises the competition in partnership with the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment Limited. The initiative offers public-sector workers a chance to build research, analytical, critical-thinking, and public-speaking skills while taking part in informed discussion on national and global issues.
