Germany are back in the market for a national football coach after Julian Nagelsmann left the post in the aftermath of the team's World Cup elimination. His departure makes him the eighth manager to resign or be removed after a side went out of the tournament. Germany's campaign ended in the round of 32, where Paraguay beat them 4-3 on penalties.

Nagelsmann had been under public criticism over the national team's performances. He was appointed in September 2023, and his contract was renewed in January 2025 to keep him in the job until 2028. Even with that extension in place, senior officials in the German Football Federation, the DFB, decided in a meeting on Monday that his spell in charge should end.

Germany have lifted the World Cup four times, but this latest elimination followed two other disappointing tournament exits. Before losing to Paraguay, the team had also gone out in the group stage at the 2022 World Cup and again in 2018. Those results mean the national side has now fallen short in three straight World Cup campaigns.

Attention has now shifted to former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. The German Football Association said it will hold talks with him about the vacant head coach role. Klopp's record includes two German championships with Borussia Dortmund, along with Premier League and Champions League success with Liverpool FC.

Klopp is currently Red Bull's head of global soccer, and the DFB has confirmed that he has interest in managing the team. The other teams that have changed coaches through sackings or resignations after elimination are Shakhtar, Ecuador, Korea Republic, the Netherlands, Scotland, Tunisia and Paraguay.
