Anderson lands consecutive Reggae 6 surprises as payout tops $1m

Claiming jockey Jaheim Anderson rattled Saturday’s Reggae 6 when he steered CASUALLY YOURS (6-1) and SOLACE (4-1) to successive victories in the second and third legs. Those results helped produce a pool payout of $1,044,905 for successful combinations.

FOUR THIRTY had started the sequence at 7-2, and BALLISTIC MISSILE then scored at 4-1 from stall one in the fourth leg, leaving many players chasing this weekend’s $5.8 million single-winner bonus.

Tevin Foster supplied the Reggae 6’s first winning favourite, MONEY BOX, who raced on the straight in the fifth. Drawn widest in stall 16, the mount found a clear run and surged late to put away THE GIFTED ONE and IRISH WISH.

Foster completed a contrasting straight five-furlong brace aboard MISS MONEYPENNY, switching from post two toward the quicker stands’ rail and holding off stable companion I DREAM AGAIN by two and a half lengths in the Don Wehby Sr Memorial. Punters had sent MISS MONEYPENNY off at 6-1, doubting she could clear the inner draw in time to catch 8-5 favourite I DREAM AGAIN, well placed in stall nine.

Those doubts faded once Foster drove the Bern Identity–Pomeroy’s Secret filly toward midtrack, pressing 99-1 shot MY SUNSHINE until that rival faded inside the final furlong. I DREAM AGAIN and BOB THE BUILDER — the latter knocked about leaving the gate — both closed late but could not catch MISS MONEYPENNY, who drew clear to win in 1:00.1 by two and a half lengths for champion leading trainer Jason DaCosta.

Anthony Nunes, starting the day about $6 million behind DaCosta on the stakes table, saddled consecutive winners of his own: three-year-old first-starter WALK THE PLANK and Jamaica Oaks prospect TIA MARIA, who took the fillies-only Simply Magic Cup over nine furlongs and 25 yards.

WALK THE PLANK (Buzz Nightmare–Rackam’s Mistress), a half-brother to Captain Sparrow (Soul Warrior) — third behind Crown Chaser and Run Julie Run in the 2024 Jamaica Derby — led SHE’S IDEAL and won the six-furlong John Clifton Wright Memorial with ease on debut in 1:13.1. Reyan Lewis, who rode 6-5 favourite WALK THE PLANK, later completed a brace on Patrick Lynch’s 3-1 chance D’STORM, turning back 26-1 outsider SECRET SENSATION over seven furlongs in the eighth.

The meeting returns on Saturday, a week before a much larger programme that is set to restore the Grade One Diamond Mile for a $10 million purse — a win-and-in berth for December’s US$300,000 Mouttet Mile.
