Coach Tyler Young puts team through lively football skills lesson
Coach Tyler Young turned a football training session into an energetic classroom, teaching Xavier, Ruben, Walter and other participants the meaning of several widely used terms before putting the group through a test match.
Young began with the hat-trick, explaining that it occurs when a player scores three goals. Each participant was then invited to make three attempts at finding the net, with Walter taking time to prepare before completing the exercise.
The lesson moved to handballs, with Young demonstrating what happens when the ball makes contact with a player’s hand during a game. Participants were asked to control a thrown ball first with a hand and then with a foot so they could recognise the difference.
Young also introduced the penalty kick, which is taken from inside the penalty area towards the goal. The group practised the technique before continuing to headers, where players use their heads to direct the ball. Walter attempted to guide a delivery into the net during that demonstration.
Another skill covered was the nutmeg, commonly called a “salad” in Jamaica. Young showed the group how a player can send the ball between an opponent’s legs while keeping possession. The practical exercise produced several playful exchanges as participants took turns defending.
The class also examined the role of the video assistant referee, known as VAR. Young described the official as someone who reviews video footage to determine what occurred during an incident. One participant compared the role to that of security personnel watching a camera.
Fouls were demonstrated as illegal physical contact on the pitch, including pushing, kicking or punching another player. Young then explained that a defender is responsible for preventing the opposing team from reaching the goal and scoring.
After reviewing the terms, the participants played a short match featuring calls for red and yellow cards. A penalty was awarded to Walter, while others took positions around the goal. The light-hearted contest concluded the practical lesson on football language and basic play.
