Portland Retiree Charged After Alleged Firearm Threat During Roadway Encounter

A 78-year-old Portland retiree who holds a licensed firearm has been charged after police say he was involved in a confrontation in his community last week.

Police said he is facing charges of assault at common law and using a firearm to commit a scheduled offence. The charges are tied to an incident reported on Saturday, May 23.

The Port Antonio police said that about 4 p.m., a man was walking on a road when the retiree, who was driving a motor vehicle, allegedly went at him.

Investigators reported that the retiree got out of the vehicle, moved towards the man and allegedly made threats. He is also accused of showing his licensed firearm and pressing it against the man’s side.

Police said the encounter led to the man falling to the ground. He later got back up, ran from the area and called out for help.

The police were contacted, and the retiree was later taken into custody. He was charged after a question-and-answer session was held with his attorney present.
