Alister McLean chosen for Jamaica’s first disability inclusion advocate post

Alister McLean is now Jamaica’s inaugural Disability Inclusion Advocate.
McLean, known for youth advocacy and for speaking publicly on disability rights, has built recognition through work grounded in his own experience. His advocacy has challenged negative attitudes, pushed for better access and supported fairer chances for persons with disabilities, reinforcing the message that disability does not define ability.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. announced the appointment on May 19 while making his contribution to the 2026/27 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.
“He will support me and the Ministry in advancing awareness, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and promoting policies that protect rights and expand opportunity for all,” Charles said.
The Minister said the move is an intentional and important action aimed at removing obstacles, affirming dignity, and improving the well-being and economic prospects of Jamaicans with disabilities.
