Belize Confirms Eight Measles Cases as Health Ministry Calls for Vaccination

Belize’s Ministry of Health and Wellness has called on the public to stay alert after measles infections increased, including cases connected to overseas travel and new transmissions detected locally. Officials said eight cases have been confirmed in Belize since the start of 2026, while other possible infections are still being assessed.
The authorities said they are keeping the outbreak under close watch and expanding the country’s surveillance and response work. The ministry cautioned that people who have not been immunised are at greater risk, especially those who live in border areas or pass through those communities.
Measles is a very infectious viral illness. It can move from person to person through droplets in the air when someone who is infected coughs or sneezes, and it may also spread by direct contact. Health officials said the disease can be particularly dangerous for children younger than five.
Common signs include fever, coughing, a runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that usually starts on the face before moving to other parts of the body. Symptoms can develop anywhere from seven to 21 days after a person is exposed.
The ministry said anyone who thinks they may have come into contact with measles should reach out to the nearest health centre or call 0-800-MOH-CARE (0-800-664-2273). People with fever and rash symptoms are being advised to get medical help quickly and, where possible, telephone before going to a clinic.
Health officials said Belize is coordinating with regional and international partners to limit spread and stop additional cases. They again identified vaccination as the strongest defence against measles while public health teams continue their work in affected areas.
