Dane Nelson Opens 2026 at Century Mile with Front-Running Win

Dane Nelson, a four-time Jamaican champion jockey, wasted no time making his mark in Canada, starting his 2026 stint at Century Mile with victory in race four of eight on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The three-time international champion partnered with Crusher Royale, trained by Gonzalo Anderson, in the CAN$21,500 Allowance for horses aged three and older over five furlongs on dirt. Nelson put the bay gelding in front right away, carried speed under pressure around the far turn, then answered a challenge in the lane to pull clear again. Crusher Royale stopped the clock at 58.2 and won by 1 1/4 lengths over Newhart, ridden by Brian Boodramsingh, while Gotme, with Enrique Gonzalez aboard, finished another length behind in third.

Nelson said the overseas result still carries weight even when it is part of routine work. “It is always good to win races on the international stages. I am grateful for the win and I will continue to do the hard work,” Nelson said.
