Franklin Town Primary School was among the Labour Day project sites on Tuesday as volunteers joined a Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation-backed effort to clean, paint, beautify and repair parts of the school compound.

The school community said Labour Day has long been important to Franklin Town Primary, with past projects including the repainting of the pedestrian crossing outside the institution. This year, the KSAMC civic committee selected the school for more extensive work, including repairs to students' bathrooms.

According to the school, the restroom improvements will give pupils a cleaner and more comfortable space when they return on Wednesday. Volunteers were also involved in general work across the compound as part of the day's activities.

An organiser said Franklin Town Primary was recommended through the KSAMC civic committee as one of the Labour Day projects because the school had sanitation needs, particularly in the male and female bathrooms. Technical work reportedly began on Friday, with Labour Day activities focused on painting and completing tiling around bathroom areas.

Community participation was a central message from those involved. One representative urged Jamaicans to see Labour Day not only as a time to recognise workers, but as a chance to take part in projects that improve their own communities.

The project also drew support from community members and festival queens, who described the day as an opportunity to contribute to community and national development through practical service. Participants said even smaller projects can have a real impact when they directly benefit children and neighbourhood institutions.

One volunteer said the national theme, "one people, one purpose in all things Jamaica Wins," encouraged her to assist in Franklin Town, where she has community ties. She said whether the task involved planting, cleaning or improving the school environment, she was willing to help.
