Granville Police Shooting: Woman Fatally Shot During Protest in Granville, St James

A protest in Granville, St James, on Sunday afternoon turned deadly after a woman was fatally shot during an incident involving the police.

The deceased, identified only by the alias “Buju,” was reportedly involved in a confrontation with police officers who had been deployed to monitor the demonstration when she was shot.

The protest was reportedly organized in response to last week’s fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy, an incident that has heightened tensions within the St James community.

Following Sunday’s shooting, a heavy police presence remained in Granville as residents gathered in the area. Up to publication time, law enforcement officials had not issued an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Member of Parliament for St James West Central, Marlene Malahoo Forte, visited the scene and expressed concern about the development. While emphasizing the importance of due process, she suggested that urgent attention may be required in relation to the officer involved.

“This one doesn’t look good,” the MP reportedly told journalists at the location, while cautioning against drawing conclusions before investigations are completed.

The latest Granville police shooting follows growing public debate surrounding recent fatal encounters involving law enforcement in the community.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which probes fatal shootings involving members of the security forces, is expected to carry out investigations into the incident.
