Red Stripe Premier League semi-finals open Sunday at National Stadium
The Red Stripe Jamaica Premier League reaches its semi-final stage on Sunday at the National Stadium, leaving four teams two rounds from the championship.
Cavalier, the defending champions, meet Montego Bay United in the opening fixture. Cavalier came through a tough two-legged quarter-final against Waterhouse, while Montego Bay United secured an automatic semi-final place and about a week and a half of rest before the tie.
A Cavalier representative said the club has won the title recently and expects a sharper level of football and intensity in the playoffs. The side, he added, is focused on keeping the trophy. Montego Bay United players said they are ready physically, mentally, and psychologically for the semi-final. They stressed they represent Montego Bay, their families, and themselves, and must handle whatever pressure the closing stretch brings.
Cavalier’s camp has spoken about hoping opponents who rested stay cold, while Montego Bay United coach Zavier Gilbert will want the break to have helped. United went into the pause on the back of three defeats, but Gilbert said that run is not proof the team is falling apart.
The second semi-final pairs Mount Pleasant FA with Portmore United, who eliminated Racing United to advance. Portmore go into the match having played recently, while Mount Pleasant rested, reopening the usual debate over freshness versus match rhythm.
In three league meetings this season, Mount Pleasant have two wins and a draw and have not lost to Portmore. Portmore’s last outing against them ended in a 4-0 loss. Officials from both camps said earlier results will not decide a semi-final and that mindset and preparation matter more than fatigue or past scores.
The first match kicks off at 5:00 p.m., with the second at 7:30 p.m.
