Romain Virgo traces how Love Doctor grew from a teenage Penthouse session into a UK hit

Reggae singer Romain Virgo has marked 17 years since he introduced himself to audiences as the “love doctor,” and in a culture segment he retraced how that signature song came together when he was still a teenager.

Virgo said he wrote Love Doctor at age 17 even though he knew little about romance at the time. He was simply trying to finish a tune. Donovan Germaine at Penthouse Records supplied the rhythm, and Virgo would travel between town and country for studio time, usually voicing tracks on Thursday evenings. He drafted the melody at home in the country.

The hook stayed in his head after hearing a line in 50 Cent’s Candy Shop about a “magic stick” and “love doctor.” He aimed for a soulful feel on a soulful rhythm and hoped Germaine would approve. When the writing was done, Virgo worried the lyrics sounded too plain — lines about calling anytime and kissing on the lips felt basic to him — but Germaine loved the track.

Asked whether he was in love then, Virgo said no. He had a high-school girlfriend, but at 17 the relationship had not gone that far. He was still surprised when the song became one of his biggest hits.

Virgo said he first learned the record was gaining traction in the United Kingdom, where he heard David Radigan had played it, even though they had not shot a music video at first. He later made a video for the song, which he now counts among the finest love songs in his catalogue. Performing Love Doctor in the UK, he said, showed him how strongly audiences already knew the tune — the crowd response when he started singing caught him off guard.

Virgo, now 34, said he still performs Love Doctor regularly, a track born from a country home session and a Penthouse rhythm that outgrew his early doubts about its simplicity.
