Sabrina Lyn leads Tornadoes Invitational swim meet at National Aquatic Centre
Paris 2024 Olympian Sabrina Lyn is set to be one of the main attractions at the 24th Tornadoes Invitational Swim Meet, which begins Friday at the National Aquatic Centre. The three-day competition will bring together leading swimmers from across Jamaica.
Lyn, who came through the Tornado Swim Club and now attends Louisiana State University, has returned home to compete in the meet. She said local competition remains valuable preparation for bigger assignments.
“Local meets are really important,” Lyn said. “They really help you practice for further along the line. As long as you take it seriously and try your hardest, it really does set you up for preparing to race at really big meets.”
She added that racing itself is a skill swimmers must sharpen, not simply something that follows training. According to Lyn, local meets give athletes a useful setting to practise how to compete under race conditions.
Two young local swimmers are also aiming to use the meet to strengthen their qualification bids for upcoming events. One said the goal is to secure additional qualifying times for Panama, maintain a strong ranking position, lower personal times and enjoy the competition.
Another swimmer said the target is to make a significant improvement in the 200 metres freestyle, with hopes of qualifying for next year’s Goodwill competition and representing Jamaica.
Tornado Swim Club head coach Wendy Lee said the club continues to focus on building Jamaican talent capable of earning national selection. She said Tornado swimmers have been represented on Jamaican teams from the eight-and-under level at the Goodwill Games through to the Olympic stage.
Lee also said the club has helped develop five Olympians, including three swimmers and two coaches, with their early training rooted at the stadium.
The Tornadoes Invitational is scheduled to run through Sunday.
