While some people doubted that he would succeed, he didn’t allow it to define him. Instead, he used it as fuel, embarking on a journey that would prove hard work, determination and self-belief can take you far beyond what others expect.
Today, Bolt, who started his career washing dishes as a steward, leads the food and beverage operations at one of Jamaica’s premier resorts.
Bolt’s journey began in 2003 at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort when he joined the team as a steward for what was originally intended to be a two-week stint. However, he quickly realised he wanted more. Eager to grow and develop, he embraced every opportunity that came his way.
Encouraged by a mentor who saw his potential, Bolt soon transitioned into the banqueting department, taking the first step toward a promising career in hospitality.
His drive to succeed led him to the Manor Restaurant at Sandals Ochi, where he took on the role of waiter. It was here that his leadership qualities truly began to emerge.
When the restaurant unexpectedly found itself without a manager, Bolt stepped up, taking the initiative to represent his team at food and beverage leadership meetings. His courage, confidence and willingness to lead caught the attention of senior executives and that bold decision became a defining moment in his career.
Recognising his potential, senior leaders challenged him to improve guest satisfaction scores and increase wine sales at the Manor Restaurant. He rose to the occasion and exceeded expectations.
The results he delivered spoke volumes, earning him an opportunity to join the opening team at Sandals Emerald Bay in The Bahamas. There, he spent nearly a year helping to build and train a new team while bringing the Sandals culture and service standards to life.
At the conclusion of his assignment, he was offered a permanent position overseas. While many believed his future lay abroad, Sandals leadership saw something even greater. After extensive discussions, the decision was made to offer him the position as a supervisor — a clear indication that his talent and leadership potential had not gone unnoticed.
Back at Sandals Ochi, Bolt continued to excel, overseeing operations across several restaurants and further strengthening his leadership skills. Yet his ambition continued to push him forward.
In 2009, he embarked on a new chapter, joining a popular cruise line where he spent 11 years building an impressive global hospitality career.
Working across specialty restaurants and main dining venues, he honed his leadership abilities while delivering exceptional experiences to guests from around the world.
Despite his international success, Bolt never lost sight of home and eventually returned to Jamaica and rejoined the Sandals family at Sandals Royal Plantation as assistant wedding and events manager. He later transitioned into the role of assistant food and beverage manager before earning his current position as food and beverage manager.
Today, he leads with passion, discipline and a deep understanding of the industry to which he has dedicated more than two decades of his life.
Bolt’s story is about far more than career progression. It is a story of resilience, perseverance and the courage to rise above limitations. It is about refusing to be defined by where you start and choosing instead to focus on where you can go.
Above all, his journey serves as a powerful reminder that the tourism industry has the ability to transform lives, creating leaders from humble beginnings and providing Jamaicans with opportunities to shine on the world stage.
