Ascot Infant kept their title defence alive in the Portmore Sports Association Electra Plus Basic Schools football competition, booking a semi-final place with a 5-0 quarter-final victory over Union Gardens Infant.

Cassidy Patterson was the standout scorer for the defending champions, netting in the ninth, 10th and 30th minutes. Iona Dover also got on the scoresheet in the third minute, while Liam Gordon added another goal in the 19th. A team representative said the players went into the match looking to apply new techniques.

Greater Portmore Infant, who reached last year’s final, also advanced after edging Portsmouth Basic 1-0. Marquis Ellington scored the decisive goal in the 30th minute to send Greater Portmore through to the last four.

Naggo Head Infant and Majestic Gardens Infant completed the semi-final line-up after wins over Waterford and Silverstone, respectively. Oshane Gayle struck in the 28th minute for Naggo Head, while Majestic Gardens, newcomers to the competition, got past Silverstone on penalties after a 1-1 result through regular and extra time. One speaker referenced the challenge of a red card and the need to regroup for the semi-final, while another said the boys remained excited and eager to play.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday at Portsmouth Primary. Majestic Gardens will meet Greater Portmore in the opening match at 1:00 p.m., before Ascot face Naggo Head in the second game at 2:00 p.m.
