Seville Heritage Park set for expanded Emancipation Jubilee on Augus Mawnin
Organisers say the Emancipation Jubilee Vigil will run from Friday, July 31, through Saturday, August 1 — known as Augus Mawnin — at Seville Heritage Park in St Ann. Planners cast the gathering as a strong observance of liberty, African roots, and the country’s staying power.
The 2026 edition carries added weight after Hurricane Melissa struck in late 2025. Organisers frame part of the programme as honouring Jamaicans’ grit and resolve, reflecting the tallawah character of earlier generations and marking notable gains along the recovery path.
Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) chairman Orville Hill said the Jubilee should outdo the previous year’s turnout of about 8,000 people.
“This year’s celebration promises an even richer and more immersive experience. Our patrons can look forward to a stellar line-up of top local cultural artistes and bands, delivering powerful performances rooted in African retention, resistance, and cultural pride such as the Charles Town Maroons, Hertford Cultural Group, Manchioneal Culture Group, Petra Kay, Sista Pat, Warrior King, Marcia Griffiths and many more,” Hill said.
“One of the highlights of this year’s event is the re-enactment of the Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation at 12 midnight followed by a floral tribute to the African ancestors.”
Also on offer will be a lively artisan village presenting genuine Jamaican art, craft, fashion, and heritage goods; a food court with a wide range of traditional Jamaican dishes available for the full duration; and an exhibitor’s village displaying cultural artefacts, publications, and material on Jamaica’s heritage and culture, alongside other displays from the JNHT’s partners.
As in past emancipation observances, chocolate tea will be given free overnight in enamel mugs, meant to provide comfort, sustenance, and a link to ancestral custom. Visitors are urged to bring their own enamel mugs or buy them at the JNHT stalls on site.
