Oakley meets Paulino as eight Jamaicans contest Monaco Diamond League

2 min read

The Wanda Diamond League reaches its 10th round tomorrow when the Herculis EBS meeting unfolds at Louis II Stadium in Monaco, and eight Jamaican athletes are entered across the programme.

For Jamaican fans, the women’s 400 metres stands out. Dejanea Oakley remains undefeated in the one-lap event this season after opening her professional campaign with a win at last week’s Paris Diamond League. She now confronts her stiffest challenge to date.

Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, the global leader at 48.48 seconds, is in the same race. The pair were due to clash in Paris before Paulino pulled out late, leaving Oakley to take the victory. Oakley’s season and personal best sits at 48.79 seconds, so she will need a quicker run to stop Paulino, who is making her third Diamond League outing of 2026.

Also in the mix are world indoor champion Gloria Manuel of the Czech Republic (49.37), American Aaliyah Butler (49.78), and Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce, whose season best is 49.75 seconds. Any of them could disrupt the expected duel in a deep field.

National champion Demisha Roswell contests the women’s 100 metres hurdles against in-form American Masai Russell, whose personal best of 12.14 seconds is only 0.02 shy of the world record. Roswell leads Jamaicans this season at 12.40 seconds and is chasing a faster mark after missing selection for Jamaica’s Commonwealth Games squad. World champion Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland (season best 12.62) and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands (12.41) complete a strong lineup.

World 100 metres champion Oblique Seville, the world leader at 9.82 seconds, runs the men’s sprint. After finishing second in Paris, he will be hunting a return to the top of the podium. Italy’s Marcel Jacobs, who recently ran a wind-assisted 9.67 seconds (4.1 m/s) and holds a legal season best of 9.96, joins Colombia’s Ronal Longa (9.85), American Jordan Anthony (9.91), and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo (9.95) among those aiming to deny the Jamaican.

Four further Jamaicans feature elsewhere: Ackelia Smith in a loaded women’s triple jump, Romaine Beckford in the men’s high jump, and Tajay Gayle and Wayne Pinnock in the men’s long jump.

The women’s 200 metres should also draw interest, bringing together the three quickest performers this season — Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands (21.68), American Gabrielle Thomas (21.70), and Olympic champion Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia (21.86).
