Flames tore through part of the Myersville dump in St. Elizabeth on Saturday, sending emergency crews to the site as authorities worked to establish what had started the fire.

The cause of the blaze had not been confirmed when firefighters arrived shortly after 1:00 p.m. Crews moved quickly to bring the fire under control and stop it from spreading to other areas of the dump. Personnel remained on the scene for an extended period as they worked to fully put out the flames.

Two fire units were assigned to the incident. A pump truck from Junction, unit 541, was on hand alongside a water tender from Santa Cruz.

The response came as people who earn their living from activities at the dump said they were worried about Saturday's fire and what it could mean for their work and safety at the site.
