British-Jamaican Jhané Gibson was announced the winner of the culinary television show ‘MasterChef United Kingdom’ moments ago.
The 29-year-old Gibson — born to a Jamaican father from May Pen, Clarendon, who immigrated to the United Kingdom (UK), and an English mother whose parents were raised in the island's capital — cinched victory in the amateur cook reality competition over finalists Kirsten Dodd and Matt Willett.
Moments after being named the champion, Gibson was overwhelmed with gratitude and disbelief.
“I still can’t believe that I am a MasterChef champion! I worked so hard throughout the show to improve with every dish," Gibson told The Gleaner, in a post-show interview.
"Winning really feels like all of the hard work paid off. It’s taught me that you can do anything you put your mind to! I was confident in my flavours but I knew that I was only as good as my last dish, so I never got complacent and just focused on the challenge in front of me," she joyfully shared.
The second-generation Jamaican pointed to her Caribbean ancestry as having a major impact on her win.
"I was taught to cook by my family, so Jamaican cuisine will always influence everything I cook," said Gibson, who noted that before competing on MasterChef she had never stepped foot into a professional kitchen.
The iteration of MasterChef UK on which Gibson triumphed ran for 21 episodes on the BBC.
Co-hosted by Grace Dent and Anna Haugh, the show began with 48 amateur cooks in the first airing and concluded with the final four competitors battling it out in the kitchen in Antigua and Barbuda, where the cast and crew travelled to film the finale.
