Buju Banton honoured with Tamarac and Broward keys at Yard on the Lawn

Dancehall stalwart Buju Banton, born Mark Anthony Myrie, was saluted in Florida recently before a record audience of more than 14,000 people, receiving both the Key to the City of Tamarac and the Key to Broward County at Tamarac’s yearly Yard on the Lawn Music Festival.

The honours recognised Buju’s achievements across music and culture, his philanthropic work, and the part he has played as a Caribbean representative on the international stage. Vice Mayor Marlon D. Bolton sought the double recognition, which was officially handed over by the Tamarac City Commission, joined by Broward County Commissioners Hazelle P. Rogers and Alexandra P. Davis.

Speaking from the stage after receiving the keys, Buju said the occasion carried meaning beyond his own career. “This is not just for me but for all the people in the Caribbean, for the culture, and for everyone who continues to rise above every obstacle with faith and determination. Let us continue to uplift one another and never forget where we come from.”

Buju also said that, after many honours throughout his career, this stage of his life has given him a deeper understanding of what it means to represent reggae and dancehall, and of the power music has on people. “Right now, I can tell you that I’m a big man, so I can see how music changes people and transforms lives, and it really moves me to know that I’m a part of a network that makes people feel, think, laugh and let loose and just enjoy what I have produced over these many years. I really am grateful for this,” he said.

Bolton said the presentation properly acknowledged an artiste whose reach goes well past the entertainment space. He said Buju’s catalogue has soundtracked generations, helped carry Caribbean culture across the globe, and pushed messages of resilience and hope. “Buju Banton’s voice has inspired generations. His music speaks to perseverance, empowerment, and truth. Presenting him with these keys symbolises our gratitude for the profound impact he has had on people throughout the world,” he said.
