Operation CALM Targets Hurricane Flood Risk Across Jamaica

1 min read

Jamaica's Government has introduced Operation CALM, a national programme intended to lessen the impact of flooding linked to hurricanes. The initiative, whose name means Cleaning, Advising, Leveraging, and Maintaining, is being directed by the Ministry of Local Government.

Officials say the work is meant to address flood threats faced by communities across the island, especially after the destruction associated with Hurricane Melissa.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness discussed the programme at the National Solid Waste Management Authority and Municipal Police Management Long Service Awards. He set out its aims and said he expected it to make a difference nationally, while also announcing new vehicles for the NSWMA to improve field operations.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie also backed the plan, saying he was confident Operation CALM would bring practical benefits to flood-prone areas.
