Chanoy Steven killed in Maroon Town shooting as St James murders climb

St. James

A 27-year-old St James labourer was fatally shot in Maroon Town on Wednesday evening after he was attacked by persons not yet identified by investigators.

Police have named him as Chanoy 'Box Head' Steven, who lived along Phoenix Road in the community.

According to reports, the shooting happened about 6:10 p.m. Steven was rushed to hospital, but he was later confirmed dead.

Investigators from the Maroon Town police are now carrying out a murder probe.

The incident adds to a troubling murder tally in St James, which remains ahead of Jamaica's other 18 police divisions so far this year. Up to May 31, the division had counted 30 murders, compared with 22 over the same period in 2025, an increase of eight cases or 36 per cent.
