Chazae Morgan says Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship will ease cost of radiological sciences studies
Chazae Morgan, one of the nearly 200 new awardees recognised under the Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship for 2025, said the financial support will make it easier for her to continue studying radiological sciences and concentrate on her goals.
Morgan said she had long wanted to enter the medical sciences, but became certain about her direction while in grade 8 after her grandfather died from cancer that was detected too late for effective intervention. She said that experience pushed her toward radiological sciences, a field she described as helping doctors identify illness and determine treatment.
"We are the eyes of medicine," Morgan said, explaining why she believes the discipline is important to patient care. She added that she wants to help families get answers earlier so that others do not face the same kind of loss she experienced.
During the interview, Morgan also referred to the death of her younger cousin, another personal loss that has shaped her outlook and strengthened her resolve to work in healthcare.
She said receiving the scholarship was a major boost as she advances through tertiary studies, which she described as costly and difficult to manage. "This financial assistance will alleviate a lot of the stress so I can focus on what really matters," she said, adding that her aim is to do well in school and eventually help people in Jamaica.
Morgan said she is now heading into her second year. She also indicated that her programme runs for four years because she is specialising in MI, and welcomed the possibility of reapplying for scholarship support in the remaining years of study.
The scholarship feature presented her story as an example of how the Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship is helping to support healthcare training in Jamaica.
