China reaffirms Jamaica ties as Crossroads protesters oppose US migrant pact

China has defended its 53-year relationship with Jamaica, citing more than US$2.1 billion in local investments and recent disaster relief as evidence of a mutually beneficial partnership. The statement comes roughly one week after Carrie Lake, the nominated United States ambassador to Jamaica, told a US Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that she intends to counter China's influence on the island.

Protesters wearing yellow gathered at Crossroads in St. Andrew on Wednesday morning to oppose the government's agreement with the United States to temporarily receive third-country nationals. Demonstrators also called for the resignation of a government minister following adverse findings by the integrity commission.

The timeline for fully restoring Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, St. James, has been pushed back from September 2026 to March 2027. Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton told the media on Monday that he is pressing for the work to be completed before the end of this year.
