Citi Jamaica celebrates Global Community Day by supporting farmers in Rural St. Andrew

Citi Jamaica marked its annual Global Community Day (GCD) on Saturday, June 27, 2026, through a community outreach initiative designed to support farmers in rural St. Andrew who continue to recover from the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

In collaboration with United Way Jamaica and the Jamaica Agricultural Society, Citi volunteers gathered at St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Mavis Bank, St. Andrew, to provide practical assistance and engage directly with members of the local farming community. The initiative forms part of Citi’s global tradition of volunteerism, which brings employees together each year to make a positive impact in the communities where the company operates. 

The event focused on strengthening food security and supporting agricultural recovery efforts following significant agricultural losses caused by Hurricane Melissa. During the outreach activity, Citi volunteers distributed chicks and seedlings to more than 25 farmers, helping to support the restoration of livelihoods and local food production. 

The day also featured an interactive disaster preparedness session led by representatives of the Jamaica Agricultural Society. Farmers received practical information and guidance to help strengthen resilience and prepare for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. The timely session reinforced the importance of sustainable farming practices and disaster readiness in safeguarding agricultural communities. 

Speaking during the event, Citi Jamaica Country Officer Eva Lewis welcomed participants and emphasised the importance of partnerships and community engagement in creating lasting impact. Representatives of the Jamaica Agricultural Society also participated in the opening ceremony, underscoring the collaborative effort behind the initiative. 

In addition to distributing resources, Citi volunteers visited a nearby farm where they learned firsthand about local agricultural practices and cash crop cultivation. Farmers shared their experiences and planting techniques, providing volunteers with valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities within Jamaica’s agricultural sector. 

“Global Community Day reflects Citi’s commitment to strengthening communities through volunteerism and partnership,” said Eva Lewis, Citi Jamaica Country Officer. “We are proud to support Jamaican farmers and contribute to initiatives that promote sustainability, resilience, and economic well-being.” 

Citi Jamaica expressed its appreciation to United Way Jamaica, the Jamaica Agricultural Society, and all volunteers, friends, and family members whose participation helped make the event a meaningful and rewarding experience. The collaboration demonstrated the power of community partnerships in addressing local needs and supporting long-term recovery efforts.
