Cornwall Regional Hospital Gets 10,000-Sq-Ft Medical Dome to Boost Western Jamaica Emergency Care

Savanna-la-mar, Westmoreland — Emergency healthcare across western Jamaica is set for a major boost following the announcement of a 10,000-square-foot hardened medical dome to be deployed at Cornwall Regional Hospital. The plan was disclosed on Saturday, February 7, 2026, during a press briefing at the head office of the Western Regional Health Authority, and forms part of the recovery response to Hurricane Melissa.

The new facility will deliver 100 beds of additional surge capacity and will come outfitted with medical equipment, emergency stocks, communications gear and the supporting infrastructure needed to keep services running. Officials say it has been built to safeguard continuity of care for people living in St. James, Westmoreland, Hanover and Trelawny, easing overcrowding and providing a fallback during hurricanes and other major emergencies.

The project is being rolled out under the Jamaica Hurricane Resilience Medical Dome Initiative, a partnership involving the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Judah 1, the Kennedy Quick Reaction Fund, the National Health Fund and Magna Motors/Hyundai.

Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, CD, MP, said the dome would directly bolster healthcare delivery in the region. "This medical dome strengthens emergency response in western Jamaica and ensures that residents continue to have access to critical healthcare services during hurricanes and national emergencies. It is a practical investment in resilience and in protecting lives across the region," the Minister said in his keynote address.

Judah 1, described as the world's first and only Christian NGO airline, is backing the project as part of its disaster response work. Founder and CEO Everett Aaron said the organisation's priority was to be present for communities at their most vulnerable moments. "Western Jamaica has faced real challenges following Hurricane Melissa. Supporting this medical dome is about standing with the people of this region, strengthening healthcare resilience, and working together to ensure care is available when it matters most," Aaron said.

Private-sector backing has also played a key role. Clayton Clarke, Head of Corporate and Pre-Owned Sales at Hyundai Jamaica, noted that the initiative supports recovery work across the county of Cornwall and the wider western end of the island, where dependable healthcare infrastructure remains essential.

Once in place, the dome is expected to expand Cornwall Regional Hospital's capacity to handle emergencies and to support healthcare delivery throughout western Jamaica during periods of heightened demand.
