CVM Sunrise spotlights NARO appointment, charity drives and Kingston Harbour cleanup

CVM Sunrise’s May 29 broadcast brought together public affairs, charity, sport, entertainment and environmental reporting, with segments covering national reconstruction, health advocacy, Kingston Harbour restoration, local film and football.

The programme reported that Prime Minister Andrew Holness appointed Ambassador Major General Anthony Anderson as chief executive officer of the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority. Anderson, Jamaica’s ambassador to the United States, is to take up the role on June 1 as the Government seeks to speed up post-Hurricane Melissa recovery while maintaining accountability, transparency and fiscal discipline. The authority is intended to coordinate major infrastructure, social and economic recovery projects.

The show also featured Dr Shelly-Ann Weeks of the Her Flow Foundation, who promoted the Red Run 5K and Fun Run at Hope Gardens on Sunday, May 31. Weeks said the foundation has donated almost 16 million menstrual products to more than 400 Jamaican schools over 10 years. She said Her Flow is partnering with the ministries of health and education and UNICEF on a pilot programme to help shape policy aimed at ending period poverty in schools.

In St James, CVM News reported that the JPS Foundation and Janet Richards Foundation joined more than 30 volunteers to refurbish the Salvation Army Basic School on Barnett Street in Montego Bay for Labour Day 2026. The work included painting, repairs, planting and support from civic and private-sector partners.

Environmental restoration was another focus, as GraceKennedy Foundation CEO Caroline Mahfood and Clean Harbours Jamaica managing director Michael McCarthy discussed the Kingston Harbour Cleanup Project ahead of the foundation’s 36th annual public lecture on June 5. They said barriers and interceptors at major gullies have helped keep nearly 13 million pounds of waste out of the harbour over five years.

The broadcast also previewed GATFFEST, the Greater August Town Film Festival, running from May 30 to June 7, with Jamaican film night set for June 6 at Palace Cineplex Sovereign. In sport, Mount Pleasant beat Lime Hall 5-0, Montego Bay United edged Med Forest 1-0, and Jamaica Defence Force FC upset Cavalier in the Popeyes Challenge Cup.
