Damion Lowe Set To Steady Young Reggae Boyz In Unity Cup Opener

Damion Lowe will be the senior figure Jamaica lean on today when the Reggae Boyz meet India in the Unity Cup at The Valley Stadium.
The match opens Jamaica's campaign in the tournament. The winning team will move on to the final, while the defeated side will return on Saturday for the third-place playoff.
Interim head coach Rudolph Speid has gone with a young group for the friendly competition, and seven members of the squad are in line for their first senior international appearances.
Only four players named in Jamaica's Unity Cup party are older than 25, with Lowe among that small group. At 33, he is the eldest player selected and also the most seasoned at this level, having earned 80 caps for the national team.
Speaking before the game, Lowe said his responsibility is to provide direction for the less experienced players as they settle into the pace and expectations of representing Jamaica.
"For me as a senior player, it's just to help to guide them and help them get used to the intensity and the demands of what we want as a national team- nothing too crazy."
Lowe said he does not expect the job to be overly difficult because, although several of the players are new to senior national duty, they already understand the professional game.
He said that background should make the step up smoother as they prepare to wear the national colours. "It's just to help them to get settled and versed n the international level. It is not too hard," Lowe said.
"We have quality players. The young guys have played enough professional football to know what it is like to play in a packed stadium. But again, international football is a different beast. It takes a different level of focus," Lowe continued.
Lowe also used his pre-match media duties to ask supporters to show patience with Speid as the interim coach tries to put his stamp on the team.
Speid took charge after Steve McClaren resigned following Jamaica's failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His appointment initially covered the Intercontinental playoffs, but his deal was later lengthened to include the Unity Cup.
Lowe said players will need time to get comfortable with Speid's approach, and he views this tournament as another chance for the squad to grow.
"As coach reiterated earlier, he has his own playing style, and as players, we have to be able to adapt and adjust as he wants us to," Lowe explained.
"I just hope the fans and everyone else just give more grace and give him time to share his ideas with us and build the team and bring the young ones in and give them experience so we can build something good for the future."
Jamaica and India have not met for more than 20 years. Their last meetings came in two international friendlies in 2002, when Jamaica won the first fixture 3-0 before the teams drew 0-0 in the second game.
Today's match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Jamaica time.
