Frazsiers Whip and Arnett Gardens carry semi-final leads into JWPL return legs

Defending champions Frazsiers Whip FC and Arnett Gardens go into Saturday afternoon’s Jamaica Women’s Premier League semi-final return legs with the advantage, though their positions are far from identical. Both matches will be played at the UWI-JFF/Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence, where Frazsiers Whip face Real Mona FC and Arnett Gardens meet Los Perfectos FC.

Frazsiers Whip are in control of their tie after building a 5-0 first-leg lead over Real Mona. Arnett’s margin is much slimmer, as they carry a 3-2 lead into their second meeting with Los Perfectos.

Courtney Dowdie’s Frazsiers Whip side appear strongly placed to reach a fourth consecutive final. A win or draw would also move their unbeaten record for the season to 12 matches. Their first-leg victory last weekend came against a young Real Mona outfit that only booked its semi-final place in the final week of regular-season play.

Frazsiers Whip have been the league’s most dangerous attacking team, with close to 70 goals so far. Christine Salmon, the competition’s leading scorer, has joined with Shanel Spence and Nevillegail Able to account for 54 goals. Spence was the standout finisher in the opening leg, scoring twice.

Real Mona’s campaign has still shown plenty of resilience. On returning to the competition, they managed just one point from their first two fixtures before pushing into the top four. Their place in the semi-finals was secured with a win over Cavalier FC, last season’s finalists.

The task now is far steeper. To overturn a five-goal gap, Real Mona would need a major lift in performance or a rare collapse from Frazsiers Whip. That challenge is made tougher by the fact that the defending champions have allowed only four goals all season.

The second match could be much tighter, with Arnett Gardens and Los Perfectos both trying to move past last season’s semi-final exits. Arnett were put out by Cavalier, while Los Perfectos fell to Frazsiers Whip.

The contest may be shaped by the finishing of Arnett’s Shikira Douglas and Los Perfectos’ Venicia Reid, who each scored twice in last week’s first leg. Both forwards are central to their teams’ chances.

Arnett also have attacking options in Tuanashae Hamilton, Sade Berry and Suen Gregory. Los Perfectos, however, have leaned heavily on the experienced Reid, who has scored 22 of their 35 goals this season.

Saturday’s schedule has Real Mona facing Frazsiers Whip at 3:00 pm, followed by Los Perfectos against Arnett Gardens at 5:30 pm.
