Jamaica advances digital, labour and community programmes ahead of Labour Day
Jamaica’s public-sector digital agenda, labour protections and Labour Day activities were among the main items highlighted by the Jamaica Information Service on Friday, May 22, 2026.
The Ministry of Finance signed a J$1.7-billion financing agreement with the European Union for the Digital Jamaica programme, which was finalised on July 25, 2023. The initiative is intended to widen access to affordable, secure broadband for schools and places of safety, improve digital skills among early-childhood and primary teachers, and help micro, small and medium-sized businesses use more technology. State Minister Xavier Maine said the programme supports Vision 2030 Jamaica, while EU Ambassador Dr. Hera Ascola said more than 1,000 schools and several children’s homes are expected to benefit.
Government also reported progress with electronic signatures across the public sector. Minister Audrey Marks told Parliament that the system, fully implemented in March, now allows authenticated documents to move without paper-based signatures or in-person visits. She said judges have electronically signed about 13,089 traffic-ticket warrants, reducing delays and administrative costs in the courts.
Labour and Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. said work is continuing on unemployment insurance for Jamaican workers, after Cabinet approval in May 2025 and drafting instructions in December. Consultants are expected to support the process this year, with eligible workers targeted to receive benefits within two years. He also said Jamaica’s Decent Work Country Programme with the International Labour Organization is being finalised.
Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith marked Jamaica’s 50 years in the International Maritime Organization, noting the country’s work on maritime safety, security, pollution prevention and labour standards since joining in 1976. The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation also announced J$10 million for sidewalk improvements, starting in Papine, with funding from signage fees.
Jamaica will host Caribbean Week of Agriculture from September 28 to October 2 in Trelawny under the theme “The new face of Caribbean food systems”. Agriculture Minister Floyd Green said the forum will focus on food security, agribusiness, climate-smart technology and exports. The programme also promoted Labour Day projects for May 25, children’s participation in safe community work, estate planning through wills, adoption guidance, land titling support, Workers Week activities and Forestry Department seedling distribution.
