ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A man was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with police in Thornton, St Elizabeth, on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Dwart Ferguson, also known by the aliases “Dwayne” and “Tavi,” of Thornton district.
According to police reports, law enforcement officers conducted a targeted operation in the community at about 9:30 p.m. in search of Ferguson.
Investigators say that upon noticing the police, Ferguson reportedly ran into a house and refused to open the door despite requests from officers.
Police further reported that after the door was breached, Ferguson was seen holding a firearm. Officers allegedly instructed him to drop the weapon, but he refused and pointed it at them.
The police say they took evasive action, resulting in Ferguson being shot during the encounter. He was later transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A 9mm pistol, which police say was in Ferguson’s possession, was recovered and seized following the incident.
The matter is expected to be investigated by the relevant authorities.
