Mxssivh reps Jamaica with tracks on Drake's new albums

Montego Bay-based rapper-turned-producer Mxssivh (pronounced Messiah) propelled himself into the conversation as one of the island's top beatmakers when he was listed as a producer of two huge tracks on Canadian superstar rapper Drake's surprise-release of three albums.

One of those tracks is the juicy cut, New Bestie, which is featured on the album Maid of Honour. That track references dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel in a line from the lyrics: "Addi yah mi daddy, yah di teacha/bigup the Teacha' and "mek Kartel get one line fi the Teacha, Gaza grim reaper".

Mxssivh, whose real name is Justin Junagadala, was blown away when he heard the instant club classic.

"I was actually shocked (when I heard it) because I didn't expect it at all! It was cool to hear it," the 25 year-old Mxssivh said. "The boy always tapped in to Jamaican culture and he sees everything! One thing about him, he not leaving dancehall or Jamaica out!"

He shot down an ongoing industry narrative that Drake is little more than a 'culture vulture'.

"I think it’s false. As I said before, he loves Jamaica, through and through. The music, the culture, and it’s been clear as day for years now. I met him for the first time on the show he did in Canada with Kartel and you could see the amount of love he had for the culture and Kartel himself!"  he said.

The talented beatmaker shared how he made the connection with Drake's OVO team.

"I actually had been connected with a lot of people that’s in the OVO team or closely linked with them, as friends and workwise. I flew out to Canada, flew out to Miami and the rest is history. Shout out to my boys Smashdavid, Beam, Digital Jet, 20, Jacklomastro, SkipOnTheBeat, Product, all of 'em," he said.

He dubs the New Bestie song as "definitely my biggest hit to date".

"My biggest work, yeah," he said, enthused.

Mxssivh also worked on the catchy track Ran to Atlanta by Drake, featuring Future and Molly Santana, described it as his “biggest breakthrough ever”.

Drake broke three daily Spotify records for 2026 upon release, with Iceman becoming the most-streamed album in a single day. The banger surged to #1 on the US Spotify chart and #3 on the Global Spotify chat with 2.436 million streams and 10.89 million global streams, setting a record for Future's highest single-day streaming total.

Before this success, Mxssivh was already a heavy hitter on streaming platforms with singles such as Narcissistic by Valiant and Stalk Ashley (60 million on all platforms); Chosen by Rytikal (40 million on all platforms); and Squash's Big Breeze (30 million).

Mxssivh has worked with several local and overseas acts, including rappers Trippie Redd, Famous Dex, Lil Poppa, Chief Keef and Smoke Purp. He has provided a real shot in the arm to the industry working with dancehall artistes Vybz Kartel, Squash, Malie Donn, Valiant, Skillibeng and others.  He has also whipped up head-knocking instrumentals for rapper Rude Jerms.

In 2019, Mxssivh  began his run as an industry-defining producer with two songs, Cinderella and Waterfall, which were included on Russian trap rap artiste Kizaru’s triple platinum album Karmageddon. He also produced Carousel, a track included on Kizaru’s double platinum selling EP Say No Mo.

"The Kizaru link actually happened through social media, I dm’d him on Instagram, we ended up swapping numbers and the rest was history!" he said.

He credits his mother who shares his passion for music. His mother played drums in marching bands and insisted that he began learning to play the piano at the age of six. He looks back at the stage with fondness through the lens of memory.

" It helped definitely, when it comes to music for sure, because I have a little experience with theory and so on,” he explained.

Growing up, he spent a lot of time listening to music and making beats. He began to experiment with music, recording under the pseudonym Bvsed Justin.
