Police assault case settled through mediation
A 2024 assault case against a police constable was discharged by the court following a successful restorative justice intervention.

During the session, the complainant accepted compensation in the sum of $500,000.

Constable Maurice Hylton had been placed before the Kingston & St. Andrew Parish Court on May 27, 2025, on a charge of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm, contrary to Common Law. That decision followed an investigation by INDECOM and a ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It was alleged that Constable Hylton used excessive force against the complainant when he struck him in the head with a baton. The incident, which occurred on July 30, 2024 along Shortwood Road in St. Andrew, was captured in a video recording.

In accordance with the restorative justice agreement, the Crown withdrew its case against the civilian complainant and the police officer pleaded not guilty.

INDECOM says there are approximately 80 matters before the courts, ranging from charges for murder, assault, wounding with intent, unlawful wounding and breach of the Independent Commission of Investigations Act.
