RADA advises that backyard gardeners do not require a farmer identification card

The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) is advising members of the public that information currently circulating on social media suggesting that persons engaged in backyard gardening are required to obtain a RADA Farmer Identification Card is false.

RADA wishes to assure the public that individuals who maintain backyard gardens for personal, household or recreational purposes are not required to register as farmers or obtain a Farmer Identification Card.

The Farmer Registration Program is intended primarily for individuals who are engaged in agricultural production for commercial purposes. Registration also assists RADA in maintaining accurate agricultural production data and in planning national food security initiatives.

RADA remains fully committed to encouraging every Jamaican household to grow food wherever possible. Backyard gardening contributes significantly to household food security, healthier lifestyles, environmental sustainability and greater resilience against rising food costs.

To support this national effort, RADA continues to promote its Backyard Garden Kit Program, which provides practical solutions and guidance to households interested in establishing productive home gardens. The initiative forms part of the Authority’s broader strategy to increase local food production and encourage greater participation in agriculture.

Members of the public are encouraged to obtain accurate information directly from official RADA communication channels rather than relying on unverified social media posts.
