Dehring: ICC Loan Is Short-Term Relief, Not a Long-Term Solution for West Indies Cricket
Cricket West Indies (CWI) Chief Executive Officer Chris Dehring says the US$12.82 million loan approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) is only a short-term measure and does not address the broader financial challenges facing regional cricket.
The ICC approved the loan during its Annual Board Meeting in Edinburgh earlier this month after CWI projected a US$26 million loss for the current financial year. The regional governing body is also coming off a US$28 million net loss for the financial period ending September 2025.
Speaking on CVM's Fan Central on Tuesday, Dehring acknowledged that while the financial assistance provides some immediate relief, it is not a long-term solution to the structural issues affecting West Indies cricket.
He stressed that the organisation must focus on creating a more sustainable financial model to ensure the future growth and stability of the sport across the region.
Dehring also compared the current situation facing West Indies cricket to the economic challenges experienced by several Caribbean territories during the decline of the sugar industry, suggesting the regional game is confronting a similarly significant period of transition that requires fundamental change rather than temporary financial support.
