Ten Confirmed Dead, Dozens Missing After Ferry Capsizes Off Guyana Coast

The government of Guyana says 10 bodies have been retrieved after a ferry carrying 133 people overturned off the country's coast during the weekend, and dozens of passengers are now feared dead.

According to officials, the vessel went down late on Saturday. No survivors have been located since Saturday afternoon, when Guyanese authorities reported pulling 67 people, among them 15 children, from the water.

Investigators have pointed to possible contributing factors, saying passenger records that did not match the number aboard, along with drug use by members of the crew, may have played a role in the tragedy.

The captain and other crew members have since been taken into police custody, authorities confirmed.

Officials said air traffic control picked up a distress call from the ferry at around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, prompting a search and rescue effort along the coastline.
