Dave Hanson, JN Bank senior manager and chief product officer for mortgages, joined fellow panellists on June 15 to examine how new technology is widening mortgage access for Jamaicans living abroad. The discussion formed part of the 11th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, under the theme “Diaspora Partnerships: Rebuilding a More Resilient Jamaica.”
The session, titled “Investing in Jamaica’s Property Market: Opportunities for the Diaspora,” was chaired by Lisa Rutty, a member of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council (Canada). Also presenting were Dwayne Berbick, assistant general manager for corporate communications and public affairs at the National Housing Trust, and Leighton Smith, vice president of VM Building Society Overseas Offices and chief executive officer of VM Finance Limited.
Hanson said digital innovation is dismantling obstacles that once made it difficult for overseas Jamaicans to secure home loans on the island. He told delegates that JN Bank has reworked its mortgage workflow to deliver a smoother experience for clients in the diaspora.
“At JN Bank, we understand that home ownership continues to be an elusive commodity for many aspiring Jamaicans living here and abroad, and we try to simplify our processes in that regard,” he said.
According to Hanson, the bank’s online systems let prospective buyers start the mortgage journey from outside Jamaica, without making multiple trips back home. “We have created digital footprints in terms of your ability to get a remote pre-approval online,” he said, noting that visitors to the bank’s website are guided through an online portal where they can seek pre-approval.
“Customers can also open accounts remotely through the ONE JN Passport app, enabling them to complete key steps in the mortgage process from anywhere in the world,” he pointed out.
Hanson added that back-end digital processing is designed to move applications through quickly, with the aim of placing borrowers in their new homes without delay. “Our endeavour in the entire process is to have you within the confines of your new home within 30 days,” he stressed.
He further described how JN Bank has adopted a suite of remote tools to reshape mortgage delivery for overseas clients. “Digital mortgage applications are one way that we have leveraged technology, also providing enhanced customer support through video conferencing and online chat.”
Secure platforms also support electronic submission of personal documents, cutting paperwork and easing the process for customers abroad. “We’re looking at cloud-based solutions or secure digital platforms that provide opportunities for you to upload your personal documentation,” he said, while assuring that data privacy safeguards remain in place.
Hanson also pointed to JN Properties, the JN Group’s real estate division, as a source of added support. The unit helps clients locate suitable properties and serves buyers who acquire homes as investments rather than primary residences.
“If you decide that you don’t necessarily want to come to Jamaica to stay, we can also provide property management services. If you want to rent a property, we’ll work out the dynamics as it relates to getting tenants for you, we’ll collect the rent, and we’ll remit the funds to you,” he explained.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade organised the conference in partnership with chair The Jamaica National Group, with backing from legacy partners, government ministries, departments and agencies, and diaspora stakeholders. Officials describe the gathering as Jamaica’s leading forum for connecting with its global community and promoting involvement in national development.
Running through June 18, the conference draws Jamaicans overseas together with government representatives, private-sector leaders, academics and civil society actors to explore ways of advancing development and building national resilience.
