Doyley’s Funeral Services says the remains involved in Sunday’s funeral controversy in Westmoreland were the same remains its team received from the infirmary several weeks earlier.
The company issued a statement on Wednesday after Roy Williams’ funeral at the Westmoreland Seventh-day Adventist Church descended into distress, with family members alleging that the body brought for the ceremony was not his. The episode caused upset and disorder at the church and is now being examined by the police.
In its response, the funeral home said it had acted properly in caring for the body, and it backed the work of its employees and internal systems. “At the same time, we are mindful of the grief felt by families and express heartfelt sympathies for the loss. We have communicated with the family and will offer any necessary further support they might wish from us,” the company stated.
Doyley’s said two staff members went to the Westmoreland Infirmary on March 21 to collect Williams’ body after a doctor pronounced him dead at 11:11 p.m. The business said an identification tag with Williams’ name was already on the body at the time of collection and was still attached when the remains reached the funeral home.
The funeral provider also said its usual checks for identification and storage were carried out once the body arrived. “The body that was prepared by Doyley’s Funeral Services for the May 17, 2026 funeral was the same one that was identified to us by the infirmary by way of identifying tag on March 21, 2026,” the company maintained.
Doyley’s added that after the interrupted service on Sunday, the body was taken back to the funeral home. It said the employees who had collected the remains from the infirmary later verified that it was the same body they had received on March 21.
