Jhanell Quarrie, a final-year medical student at the University of Medical Sciences of Havana in Cuba, says receiving the Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship has given her renewed momentum to finish her degree at the Facultad Salvador Allende.

Quarrie is in the closing stage of her medical training at the Havana institution. Like many students in similar programmes, she has faced financial strain while studying abroad. She said the award arrives at a critical point in her academic journey.

"It is a push to complete the last leg of my journey as a medical student," Quarrie said. "Most of us, if not all of us, face financial difficulties, and this scholarship proves to me that my country is willing to invest in my future and the future of our country on the whole."

She described the support as evidence that Jamaica is prepared to back citizens who intend to return and contribute after qualifying. Quarrie said she wants to repay that confidence through service once her training is complete.

"I can give back knowing that this country was willing to say, 'All right, you want to give back to us, let us first give to you,'" she added.

Quarrie confirmed that medicine remains her focus as she works through her final year at the Cuban faculty. The scholarship, she said, reinforces her commitment to completing the programme and returning ready to apply her skills at home.
