Magnitude 3.9 Earth Tremor Shakes Kingston and St Andrew

1 min readSt. Andrew

Residents across several parishes reported ground movement on Sunday after a magnitude 3.9 earthquake occurred at 11:45 a.m.

Data from the Earthquake Unit placed the epicentre approximately five kilometres northeast of Golden Springs in St Andrew. Shaking was reported from sections of Kingston and St Andrew eastward to Portland and St Catherine.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management has not recorded any injuries or property damage linked to the event.

The tremor follows two major earthquakes that struck Caracas, Venezuela, within recent days. During the national holiday period, specialists have pointed out that the Caribbean rests on active fault systems, which keeps seismic activity a persistent concern for the region.

Government agencies are asking residents to revisit earthquake preparedness measures and to stay tuned to official advisories.
